Slough Borough Council, along with British Cycling, are looking for residents to train up as Sky Ride Leaders for the biggest ever celebration of cycling in 2012.

Become a Sky Ride leader.Ride leaders will get a recognised qualification and help inspire cyclists to get more out of their riding. The training will show you how to plan, deliver and evaluate rides for groups of riders. Each leader will receive free kit, training, support and payment for delivering Sky Ride Local bike rides.

In return, leaders will have to commit to leading four rides on Sundays and some Saturdays in the spring, summer and autumn of 2012.

Training sessions will be held in Slough on March 24 and March 31.

Friends and families are invited to join the Sky Ride Local, a series of free bike rides in the Slough area this year.

The rides will be led by the ride leaders once they are recruited, who will help and encourage riders of all ages and abilities to explore their local area on two wheels. Rides are at four different levels and take in parks, open spaces and show off the best cycle routes locally, so there is something for everyone.

Savio DeCruz, team leader, integrated transport and road safety, said: “This is the perfect opportunity for those keen on cycling, keeping fit and being part of a wider community.

“Not only will it keep you fit and healthy, but will help others in Slough be the same and find out more about their town. You don’t have to hop over the border to get a good bike ride, we have so many wonderful places to go in the borough.”

Commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal, Cllr James Swindlehurst, said: “Slough Borough Council wants to get people cycling for commuting and as a sporting activity. The Heart of Slough Project has seen the introduction of new cycle paths and combined with Sky Ride, this is an excellent opportunity to get Slough cycling and to generate interest in cycling at the Olympics.

“I've just had my bike serviced and intend to get back on the saddle as the weather warms up, so I would encourage all those who love the outdoors to do the same and join a Sky Ride Local.”
